An ERC Advanced grant to study radio emissions from exoplanets

29 avril 2021

On April 22, 2021, the European Research Council announced the selection of the 209 winners of the "ERC Advanced Grant 2020" call. The team led by Philippe Zarka, CNRS research director at Paris Observatory - PSL, has been awarded one of the prestigious grants for the EXORADIO project, which aims to study the radio emissions of exoplanets.

The exoplanets emit radio emissions whose origin can be the magnetosphere of the exoplanet or its interaction with the plasma contained in the stellar wind of its host star.

These phenomena are well known in the Solar System. They manifest themselves for example in the form of polar auroras, allowing us to study the diversity and properties of planetary magnetospheres. But little is known about their equivalents in exoplanetary systems.

The EXORADIO project aims to better understand these mechanisms by observing them for a diversity of star types, stellar wind properties, magnetic fields and interaction geometries.

The observations will focus on the low radio frequencies from 10 to 85 Mhz thanks to the NenuFAR instrument deployed at the Observatoire de Paris - PSL on its site of Nancay.

NenuFAR will allow the largest search program for exoplanets at radio frequencies in the northern hemisphere.

The EXORADIO project will also prepare the exploration of the southern sky with SKA (Square Kilometer Array), the future giant radio telescope.

Within PSL University

The highly regarded ERC advanced fellowships are awarded each year to researchers recognized for their significant scientific achievements over the past ten years.

In 2020, more than 2,500 proposals were submitted by European scientists for a success rate of 8% (compared to 9.8% the previous year). A very selective edition.

Within the PSL University, the Observatoire de Paris-PSL is one of the three component institutions->https://psl.eu/actualites/3-laureats-des-bourses-erc-advanced-2020] to have won a grant.

Congratulations to all the winners !
