Research
Research at Paris Observatory covers all fields of contemporary astronomy and astrophysics:
● the study of the Sun and Sun-Earth relations,
● planets, exoplanets and planetary systems,
● star formation and evolution, the interstellar medium,
● galaxy formation and evolution, cosmology,
● high-energy astrophysics, gravitational wavesastroparticles, gravitation, cosmology,
● space and time metrology,
● history and philosophy of science.
The establishment develops and implements national observation services, and contributes to major projects for observing the Universe.
Education
Unité Formation et Enseignement (UFE) organizes and directs the teaching activities of the Paris Observatory. The establishment offers training in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Technologies at all levels of higher education.
As part of the Université PSL, Observatoire de Paris runs the Astrophysics graduate program, which offers a full range of courses, from Master’s degrees in Universe Sciences and Space Technologies to Doctorates. The school also teaches in three other PSL Masters programs: Quantum Engineering, Earth and Planetary Sciences, and Philosophy, as well as two PSL bachelor’s degrees, CPES and SMD. It awards the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches and hosts the Ecole Doctorale d’Astronomie et Astrophysique d’Ile-de-France (ED127).
Last but not least, Paris Observatory offers non-LMD (Licence-Master-Doctorate) courses: university diplomas and continuing education for teachers.
Outreach
Sharing knowledge through scientific and technical culture is an important part of the school’s life, amongst which:
● demonstrations on the occasion of major astronomical events
● exhibitions
● educational tours
● organization of school visits
● provision of travelling exhibitions and educational products
All these activities are described here.
