They make PSL : International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2022

11 février 2022

Portraits, interviews, podcasts, seminars... on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, February 11, find out more about the doctoral students, post-doctoral students, engineers, teachers, researchers and PSL artists who make science shine.

Less than 35% of the world’s scientists are women and only about 30% of female students choose science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-related fields in higher education. These percentages are changing, but women are still struggling to make an equitable contribution to solving the world’s crises - social, environmental or economic

Within PSL University, research chairs, associations, individual or collective projects, dedicated events : many initiatives contribute to promoting the work of women in science at PSL. The screening and debate of the documentary "Picture a Scientist" at the ENS - PSL, the research projects carried out by the Dauphine - PSL Women and Science Chair, and the encouragement given by the institutions, successfully renewed each year, to invite young female doctoral and post-doctoral students to take part in the Jeunes Talents L’Oréal-Unesco awards are just a few examples.

Most recently, researchers from the Observatoire de Paris - PSL and the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes - PSL have set up a Femmes & Sciences PSL mentoring program. Seventeen female doctoral students will benefit from the guidance of eight mentors from all walks of life. For twelve months, in addition to individual meetings with their mentor, they will meet once a month to take part in workshops, training sessions, discussion circles and conferences to help them build their career plans.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11 is an opportunity to highlight this commitment. Numerous initiatives, portraits and presentations of the work of women researchers are proposed, of which you can find a selection on the PSL website.

Concerning specifically the Observatoire de Paris - PSL, you will find :

  • Webinar of scientific culture proposed by the Observatoire de Paris - PSL : The presence of women in astronomy and astrophysics, animated by Mathilde Mâlin, PhD student at the laboratory of space studies and instrumentation in astrophysics (LESIA, Observatoire de Paris - PSL)
  • Seven young doctoral and post-doctoral students from ENS - PSL, ESPCI Paris - PSL, in the Corail labex of EPHE - PSL, Observatoire de Paris - PSL, Institut Curie and Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique have been awarded one of the prestigious "jeunes talents France" L’Oréal-UNESCO awards in 2021.
