Organized by David Valls-Gabaud, an astrophysicist at the CNRS at the Paris Observatory and a specialist in the history of astronomy, the conference aims to explore the many facets of Camille Flammarion: researcher, science writer, and bridge between science and the general public. While Flammarion is best known as one of the great popularizers of astronomy in the 19th century, his role in the scientific and cultural history of the discipline remains largely overlooked. The various presentations will thus address his intellectual journey, his scientific work, and the international networks that helped spread astronomy to a wide audience.
This event will feature speakers from the CNRS, the CNES, the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, and several European and American universities.
