NenuFAR is now beating strongly

3 février 2026

At the start of 2026, the core of the NenuFAR radio telescope in Nançay, co-financed by the Île-de-France Region, France, was completed, marking a major milestone for the instrument, the Nançay Radio Astronomy Observatory, and the Paris Observatory - PSL.

Inaugurated at 60% completion in 2019, the core was deployed gradually, in successive phases, in order to validate technical choices while ensuring a controlled ramp-up.

The core of NenuFAR is now complete : it consists of 96 mini-arrays of 19 antennas each, for a total of 1,824 antennas. This dense architecture allows for exploration of the low-frequency universe with increased sensitivity.

The last calibration observation for beamforming mode was carried out on November 30, 2025, at 11:31 p.m. The data is currently being analyzed. In addition, the core antennas are already fully operational in imaging mode, demonstrating the overall good functioning of the system and the successful integration of the new mini-networks.

This milestone marks the culmination of several years of collective work and opens up new possibilities for future observations.
