Meudon : oscillations solaires du 15 juillet 1983. Couleur, muet, 7’. Film final monté en 1987, d’Audouin Dollfus (inv. n°53)

Vol 20 Novembre 1958. Caméra horizontale. Couleur, muet, 5’. Film d’Audouin Dollfus (inv. n°68)

This film has pictures of the Sun photographed during a pilotless flight made on the 20th of November 1958, using an automatic camera trained on the horizon. Thanks to an automatic device, Audouin Dollfus’ space capsule, fitted with two cameras (one vertical, filming the balloon cluster, the other horizontal filming the horizon) rises to a high altitude and then comes back down to the surface, where it is dragged by the wind until stopped by an obstacle (typically a tree or a fence). The local peasants who come to see this object find a label asking them to phone a certain number to indicate where the balloon ended up. After that, a car leaves the Observatory to pick everything up. The distance covered can sometimes be considerable.
