Although set up for use by schools, anyone can in fact connect up to the EU-HOU radiotelescopes.
The project of the EU-HOU association (Hands-On Universe, Europe, bringing frontline interactive astronomy to the classroom) falls within the scope of the renewal of science education. Astronomical research and the use of new technologies sharpen high school students’ interest for science. The site proposes resources for secondary school teachers, as well as the organization of a network of key institutions and useful people.
The project relies on real observations, acquired if possible by the students themselves. It uses a European and international network of automatic telescopes piloted via the Internet, as well as dedicated tools (Webcam systems, radiotelescopes) created for this project. The observations can be carried out from the classroom, and analysed using software specially designed for teaching. The pedagogical resources have been created through a close collaboration between the scientists and teachers of the participating countries.
