Understanding the roundness of the Earth using a virtual reality headset app

4 September 2026

Since 28 July 2026, the Space Department of the Time-Space Laboratory at the Paris Observatory – PSL invites you to discover – through the app it has developed for virtual reality headsets, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Meta platform – how the scholars of antiquity came to understand the roundness of the Earth in their time.

We know that many scholars and philosophers of antiquity were convinced that the Earth is round. How could they have been so sure without access to all the technology we have today? Through deductive reasoning based on their observations.

Delve into the heart of antiquity and discover how scholars proved that the Earth is spherical.

Conceived by the Space Department of the Time-Space Laboratory at the Paris Observatory – PSL and produced by Orbital Views, this immersive experience puts you in the shoes of the thinkers of the time and invites you to experiment for yourself.

Explore three interactive workshops

Meet, in your mind’s eye, great minds such as Eratosthenes, Aristotle and Pliny the Elder. Grasp their insights, retrace their steps, and experience the power of simple observations that changed our view of the world.

Through experimentation, rediscover how observation and reasoning enabled scientists to understand the world, long before the advent of modern technology.

The app is free. It is intended for download by individual users.

It is also designed for educational use in teaching contexts or, more broadly, for the dissemination of knowledge: science outreach events, museums, exhibitions, organisations, schools, etc.
