Together, let’s celebrate “Night Day” on October 12, 2024!

Observatoire de Paris - PSL is an official partner of the 16the edition of the Jour de la Nuit, a national event supported by the association “Agir pour l’environnement”. On Saturday October 12, 2024, our researchers will be hosting two evening events: one in Paris, the other in Meudon.

Observatoire de Paris is delighted to have joined the official partners of the 16the edition of the “Jour de la Nuit”. This national event, coordinated by l’association Agir pour l’environnement, aims to raise public awareness of light pollution and the protection of nocturnal biodiversity and the starry sky.

In France

Jour de la Nuit (Night Day) takes place on Saturday, October 12, with a host of events taking place throughout France and abroad. This year, more than 400 events will be taking place across France: activities, extinguishers, artistic performances, photo exhibitions, nature walks, observation evenings, etc.) on the www.jourdelanuit.fr website.
On this occasion, Observatoire de Paris - PSL is taking part in two events:

The Day of the Night in Paris

Organized by the City of Paris, in partnership with Agir pour l’Environnement, the Association française d’Astronomie and the Observatoire de Paris - PSL, the evening is dedicated to the importance of darkness and the impacts of light pollution; it will revolve around several highlights:

On the program:

19:30: at the Académie du Climat (salle des fêtes), a round table “The starry night, a natural and cultural heritage to protect” to learn more about the importance of darkness and the role of cities in protecting it.

Extinctions of public lighting ;

At 8:00 pm, in the Jardin Federico García Lorca, on the banks of the Seine, at the foot of the Hôtel de Ville, a starry sky observation is offered with telescopes from the Association française d’Astronomie, in the presence of astronomers from the Observatoire de Paris - PSL.
In the event of bad weather, the evening will be cancelled.
