6 octobre 2026

The L’Oréal Foundation, in partnership with the French Academy of Sciences and the French National Commission for UNESCO, announced on 6 October 2026, for the 20th consecutive year, the winners of the 2026 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science France Award : Irène Urso, a PhD student at the Paris Observatory – PSL, is being honoured, along with three other young female researchers from PSL University.

This edition celebrates 35 female PhD and postdoctoral researchers, whose research addresses the major scientific challenges of the future and who are committed to passing on their passion to future generations of female researchers.

Hailing from all regions of mainland France and its overseas territories and representing a wide range of disciplines, a total of 35 young scientists were selected from nearly 820 candidates by a jury comprising more than 50 members of the Academy of Sciences – a body renowned for excellence in scientific evaluation and chaired by Françoise Combes, President of the Academy of Sciences and an astrophysicist at the Paris Observatory – PSL.

These young women were chosen for the excellence of their applications, the originality of their scientific projects and their desire to pass on their passion to younger generations.

Irène Urso, a PhD student at the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Research in Astrophysics at the Paris Observatory – PSL, is one of them. She is currently working on a thesis in which she models how light is bent by the gravity of black holes.

  • Brune Massoulié, PhD student (CEREMADE, Paris Dauphine University-PSL, CNRS) : Understanding the collective dynamics of particles.
  • Irène Urso, PhD student (LIRA, Paris Observatory-PSL, CNRS, Sorbonne University, Paris Cité University) : Unravelling the deflection of light by black holes.
  • Fadma Lakhal, PhD student (Laboratoire Dynamique du Noyau, CNRS, Institut Curie, Sorbonne University) : Unravelling Rad51, a protein that repairs our DNA.
