Exoplanets et cinema : a new playground for the scientists at the Observatory and the students at La Fémis !"

PSL | press release

Paris, June 30th 2016 - La Fémis and the Paris Observatory have decided to establish a number of first ever collaborations between students and researchers. Mmembers of "Paris Sciences et Lettres", these two institutions - inspired by a mutual desire to improve themselves by exploring hitherto distant domains - are an eloquent illustration of what can be achieved through intelligent collaboration by joining a group such as the PSL.

For this first collaborative effort, the Fémis students, whose task was to imagine the appearance of an exoplanet, taking into account its known physical parameters, were helped by scientists from the Paris Observatory.

Thus, each student created « his » own personal planet, imagining at each scale the landscape, the relief, the material, the structures, the textures, the colours, the illumination, the liquid flows etc.

The work is on display Friday, July 1st, from 15h to 17h at la Fémis - 6 rue Francoeur 75018 Paris (a rendez-vous is required) in the following form :

  • four models, realistic exoplanet displays, including discoveries,
    scenography, and illumination,
  • scale visual displays showing exoplanet terrains (Concept Art),
  • research files (information on exoplanet parameters : mineralogy,
    terrain, atmospheres, gravity …),
  • photographs of the models on panels.
